About this speaker

I’m Elliot Gunn, a technical writer-turned-marketer at Datafold, where I lead the docs and product storytelling around data quality and migrations.

I didn’t come into data through analytics or engineering. I took the scenic route: from academic research to sales engineering to rewriting docs I didn’t understand… until I did. Somewhere along the way, I realized that I had gotten it wrong: I wasn't a writer trying to land a coding job. Writing was how I built the fluency to think like an engineer and contribute technically. Now, I use both to help others find their path in, too.

I’ve written about why data migrations aren’t just about code rewrites, how technical founders can become clearer, more confident writers, and why good technical writing requires human judgment, not just automation. I've also created hefty guides to data migration and data quality, designed to help data teams build trust in their systems and processes.

I enjoy mentoring (check out my PyData Global 2023 talk on how to write your way into a data job) and meeting other folks in data (send me a DM on LinkedIn!)
